Toravaig House Hotel, Knock Bay, Sleat, Isle of Skye

Toravaig House Hotel and Restaurant on the beautiful Scottish Isle of Skye is the ultimate romantic retreat on Scotland’s own ‘paradise island’. Toravaig is a stylish, contemporary country house hotel situated in Sleat, the 'Garden of Skye' with magnificent views over the sea to the mainland hills beyond.
So when the hassle of the package holidays and the stresses of everyday life in a time pressured world begin to get to you, it’s time to consider a quick escape. Perhaps a few days with your most significant other. A time to relax, unwind and just enjoy.
Whisk your mind and soul away to Toravaig and Skye. Book a delightful cosy bedroom in a lovingly restored house, now a very special little country hotel, one of the very finest small luxury country house hotels in Scotland.
If the waters don't tempt you, the bedrooms surely will. The rooms are freshly presented with newly laundered, crisp white bedlinen on sleigh or brass beds, each room being individual and different with great attention to detail. Tastefully furnished bedrooms with every desirable amenity.
Toravaig offers 9 immaculate and plush rooms. All rooms are naturally ensuite, with pressurised showers, and many also have baths. Of particular note are the beautiful fabrics and wallcoverings. Each room is named after an island and the hotel offers a couple of smaller doubles or singles, a twin and a range of doubles. All rooms have TVs, many flat-screen, complimentary miniature of Toravaig malt whisky, fruit bowl, Isle of Skye bottled water, nice toiletries and radio or CD/radio, plus hospitality tray.
Here’s a summary:
Eriskay is a smallish double in reds and gold with with an oak sleigh bed and bathroom with overbath power shower (all showers are high-pressure).
Mingulay is a small double / single in restful pale colours with fine Charles Rennie Mackintosh cream silk curtains, flat screen TV and bath with overshower.
Colonsay – our favourite room, perhaps – has a bay window overlooking the garden, is finished in cinnamon and peach again with beautiful Macintosh curtains in silk, power shower only.
Oronsay is a single room in gold shades with a power shower.
Raasay, in which we stayed, is a double with garden view, with power shower (all bathrooms are fully tiled and finished to very high standard).
Berneray features a handsome big knotted pine slatted sleigh bed, has floral touches, a dramatic big round gold mirror, plus bath with overshower.
Vatersay is a double on the quietest side of the house (open the window, hear the birds sing), finished in plums and reds with an iron bedstead and bath with power overshower.
Islay is a delightful twin with lilac and gold fabric canopied beds, bath and overshower.
Taransay, in romantic gold and peach colours, has a striking black and brass bed and a bath with overshower.
Nowhere is Toravaig’s hospitality more evident than in its delightful dining service in glowing candlelight. An opportunity to revisit an earlier tradition of hospitality when meals and conversation were savoured and never rushed. The soft furnishings in the sitting room tempt guests from their rooms each night, as does the luxurious scent of cooking from the restaurant. Under the personal management of the enthusiastic owners, this hotel is gaining a fine reputation for its cuisine. The freshest of highlands and islands produce features on the menus. Highlights include an ingenious fillet of salmon served with a herb crust, on brandied fennel with caramel sauce, as well as classic saddle of venison, pan fried on a bed of parsnip & potato puree with a port wine jus.
The exquisite cuisine, served in the elegant, traditionally decorated Iona restaurant, is created from fresh local produce and is accompanied by fine wines and malts.
The Iona Restaurant, styled traditionally as you would expect in a classic Scottish Country House Hotel restaurant, is open for morning coffee, lunch, afternoon teas and dinner. Fresh local produce is used. You’ll often hear restaurants using this phrase, but here on the Isle of Skye we have some of the world’s best local produce on our doorstep.
Food is available most of the day at Toravaig where hospitality is well understood. A nice spot for lunch too, or a bowl of homemade soup and some crusty bread in the afternoon.
Sit in the deeply upholstered gold and russet sofa by the fire – and sip your pre dinner drink, a malt recommended by Ken, and chose from the à la carte menu which features a good range of prime fish and shellfish, beef, lamb and game. Vegetables are organic and feature perfect organic Glendale leaves that accompany the delicious starter of Creamed Smoked Salmon on a Bed of Spinach topped with Poached Egg Benedict – a dish less stern than the eponymous new pontiff, perhaps.
